Have you ever heard a story that sounds made up? You think to yourself, how can this story possibly be true. He or she has to be making it up. That is how I feel when I think of my own story. My own love story. This particular part of my love story is set around my engagement.
Poppa Bear and I had been living together since we got together. We both always knew we wanted to get married and that we wanted Poppa's grandfather to do it. He had been working overseas as we planned for our future. One day he called and asked how would I feel about going to California. To his hometown so that his grandfather could marry us. Lito as we call him was aging fast, so Poppa thought it best that we start thinking wedding. And think it fast. As in three months from that day fast. A destination wedding in 3 months!
Thankfully everything fell into place. I found my dress at a great little boutique. Poppa found my ring, and everything in California was going according to planned thanks to my mother-in-law. Poppa got home and we left to California right away. My dress in tow. His tux in tow. There was no way we were checking them. And there we were, two kids in love heading off to get married. The funny thing is, he hadn't even purposed yet. All of the planning had been online or over the phone. We hadn't seen one another until he came home on vacation for the wedding. Were we crazy or just too in love to think about it?
With our eye on the prize we landed in San Francisco. Our first stop for a little sight seeing before taking the drive to his hometown. I had never been to San Francisco and he had always wanted to show it to me. I wanted to see Chinatown. You know, just like in the movies. I loved it. Got me some cute souvenirs. It was wonderful. Hanging out at Fisherman's Wharf, chowing down on clam chowder. Another first. And I have to say, for my first time trying clam chowder, we sure chose the best place to try it. I was on cloud 9.
A tour bus pulls up to the Wharf and Poppa says its for us!
How amazing is that. I was even more excited. How could this day get any better. The bus took us across the Golden Gate bridge. I was in Awe. It's was beautiful. Then all of a sudden, we pulled up to a helicopter pad.Poppa had arranged for us to take a helicopter ride to see San Francisco by air. We saw San Francisco by land, and we were about to see it by air. We climbed into the helicopter. My first time in a helicopter. Poppa was on a roll that day. The sun was beginning to set, and San Francisco was just glowing in the dimming sunshine. It was gorgeous, and the sight of the Golden Gate bridge was unforgettable.
The pilot all of a sudden dipped down and flew under the bridge. It was exhilarating. Right as the pilot was going under the bridge for the second time Poppa purposed. Crying, I said Yes. The pilot instantly began playing love songs.
I couldn't believe it. We were engaged!!!. We would be getting married in three days and he was thoughtful and sweet enough to purpose anyway. We got on the helicopter as boyfriend and girlfriend and we got off as an engaged couple. When we got off of the helicopter, he had one more surprise for me. We saw San Francisco by land, by air, and now it is time to see it by sea. He had planned for us to take a tour on a boat that serves dinner during the tour. The temperature had been dropping really fast and we were already cold and really tired from such a long day, so we opted not to take the tour after all. But this time, the thought really did count.
The whole day was such a whirl wind of romance, that I couldn't imagine how it could have gotten even better. We were completely happy. Now anytime I think of, or see any pictures of the Golden Gate bridge, it takes me back to that day.
